MASTERING COMMUNICATION

“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good for the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” – Ephesians 4:29

Speaking is an art, and it must be mastered if you are to enjoy the glorious things that are spoken of you (Psalm 87:3; Hebrews 13:5–6).

Let’s take a closer look at this verse. The Spirit gives both a warning and a remedy. He says, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth.” The word “let” suggests that you have control over your tongue—you have the power to decide what to say and how to say it. Now, let’s examine the remedy He provided.

Qualities That Must Characterize Your Speech

1. Your speech must be good.
Only good people can speak good things. The question is, what is the state of your heart? Is it renewed and seasoned with God’s Word? If you are born again, you are a good person.

Ephesians 2:10 – “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works.”
James 1:17 – “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above.”

Matthew 12:33–37 explains that a good man brings forth good things from the good treasure of his heart, while an evil man brings forth evil things. Every idle word we speak will be accounted for, for by our words we are justified or condemned.

Mastering your tongue to speak right is mastering your life.
Proverbs 18:21 – “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”

So what words should you be speaking? The words of the Father.

John 8:28, 38, 12:49 show that Jesus only spoke what the Father commanded Him to say. Likewise, our speech must reflect God’s wisdom and truth.

2. Your speech must be useful for edification.
The Greek word “oikodome” means building or building up. Metaphorically, this means using our words to promote growth in Christian wisdom, holiness, and happiness.

This comes through living a Spirit-filled life. A Spirit-controlled life is a tongue-controlled life. The Holy Spirit guides us to say the right things at the right time.

Ezekiel 37:7 – “So I prophesied as I was commanded, and as I prophesied, there was a noise and a shaking.”
Galatians 5:16, 25 – “Walk in the Spirit… If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
1 Corinthians 14:3 – “He that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.”

3. Your speech must minister grace to your hearers.
Every time you speak, your words should carry virtue and life. This is easy when you recognize that you are God’s oracle.

1 Peter 4:10–11 – “If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God… that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ.”
Colossians 4:6 – “Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how to answer every man.”

Don’t throw careless words around just because you feel like it. You are not a “Mr. I Don’t Care.” You are God’s priest—called to speak with wisdom and love.

4. Your speech must be hearer-focused, not self-centered.
The more we talk about ourselves, the less attention we get. There’s nothing wrong with sharing about yourself if it serves a purpose, but remember: your listeners matter. Speak in a way that edifies and engages them.

Jesus is the perfect example of a communicator.

John 7:18 – “He that speaks of himself seeks his own glory; but he that seeks His glory that sent him, the same is true.”
