The Practice of Forgiveness
One of the beautiful privileges we have in Christ is the beauty of forgiveness. We can see the word 'forgiveness' from the conglomeration of three syllables: FOR, GIVE, NESS, where we get the words:
FOR = Acceptance of opposing views, where we get tolerance, forbearance etc.
GIVE = to offer a present.
NESS = a suffix used to indicate the state or condition of something.
By our coining, we put the word UNCONDITIONAL as your best state in giving and receiving forgiveness!
Ephesians 4:29–32
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
The word FORGIVING in that verse 32 is from the Greek word charizomai which means, among other things, to do something pleasant or agreeable (to one), to do a favour to, to gratify, to show one’s self gracious, kind, benevolent to one, to grant pardon, to give graciously, give freely, to graciously restore one to another, to preserve for one a person in peril. I like that part of the definition, which says, to do something pleasant or agreeable (to one). This calls for tolerance of the fellow—his religious views, belief systems, political opinions, denominations, whatsoever!
It is very important to remind ourselves that God has chosen, for a long time, to be the God of all who call upon His name in sincerity, in spirit and truth. No denomination pins Him down. No creed and confession ties His hand down. He became uncomfortable for a very long time, dwelling in temples made with hands.
Acts 7:48–50
Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet, Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest? Hath not my hand made all these things?
Acts 17:24
God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
John 14:17
Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Romans 8:9, 11
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
1 Corinthians 3:16
Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
Ephesians 3:17
That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
Acts 10:34–35
Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.
Some Blessed Thoughts On Forgiveness
1. Living in forgiveness is a perpetual choice to living in liberty.
Choosing not to forgive is tantamount to living in prison. We are commanded to stand in the liberty we have in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 5:1
Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
You cannot say you are living in liberty and be operating the law of bondage. The two cannot work together. You live in liberty by operating the law of liberty. That law is the principle of love.
Romans 8:1–2
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
James 1:25–27
But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed... Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
1 John 3:14–15
We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death... Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
2. Unforgiving spirit is the fertilizer for frustrating destinies.
Beside all the blessings of knowledge and godliness, without charity we become myopic, and worse than infidels.
2 Peter 1:5–9
And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge... For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful... But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
3. The greatest torment you can give your offender is forgiveness.
The focus is you, not your offender. God is love and all such practices of intimidation, humiliation, nepotism, egocentrism, tribalism etc. have nothing to do with Him. He abhors such and champions the hearts that embrace His character.
Psalms 130:1–4
Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD... But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.
God is revered for His forgiveness. So it is with those who take on that trait of Him.
4. Forgiveness carries in its wings healings.
Are you sick, looking for healing? Check your heart to see if there is no place for hatred, anger, bitterness, malice and its relatives. Do a deep search and embrace forgiveness. That will be the genesis of your divine healing.
Psalms 103:2–5
Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases... so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
Isaiah 53:3–5
He is despised and rejected of men... But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
1 Peter 2:24
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree... by whose stripes ye were healed.
John 5:14; 8:11
Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee... Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
May you be restored unto health.
May God’s Word guide you to embrace and give God’s forgiveness. May all your wounds be healed in the name of Jesus. May that broken heart be restored now in the name of Jesus! Shout a big Amen.
