Mastering Communication
"The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn't said." - Peter Drucker
MASTERING COMMUNICATION
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.(Ephesians 4:29)
Speaking is an art. It must be mastered if you are going to enjoy the glorious things which are spoken of you.(Psalm 87:3, Hebrews 13:5-6)
Let us learn something brief from the above verse. It is unusual, but let us observe the verse closely.
The Spirit gave an admonition and also provided a remedy. He says, "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth.." The word 'Let' suggests that you have power to control your tongue, and to say what you are to say it in a manner that should warrant it. Now let us look at the remedy He provided.
Qualities That Must Characterize Your Speech
1. Your speech must be good. It would take good people to speak good things. What is the state of your heart? Is your recreated and seasoned with God's Word or it is not yet. Happy are you if you are born. You are a good man.(Ephesians 2:10, James1:17)
Matthew 12:33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. 12:35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 12:37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Mastery of your tongue to speak right is mastery of life.
Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
Which word are you to be speaking then? The Word of the Father.
John 8:28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. John 8:38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father. John 12:49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
2.Your speech must be useful for edification. Edification, "oikodomē"(in Greek), means the act of building, or building up.
Metaphorically, He is telling us to use our speech to promote one another's growth in Christian wisdom, piety, happiness, and holiness.
This is where living the life of constant fullness of the Spirit comes in. Spirit controlled life is also tongue controlled life. You are guided to say what must be said.
Ezekiel 37:7 So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.
Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
1 Corinthians 14:3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
3.It must minister grace to your hearers. How important this is. There should be virtue coming out of your communication every time. This is easy, now that you are the oracle of God.
1 Peter 4:10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 4:11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
Colossians 4:6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
Don't throw words at people because you are Mr. I Don't Care. You are not so. You are God's priest. I hope that is fine.
4. Your speech must be hearer focused, not self-centered. I observed that the more I speak about me to someone, the less attention I get. Why? First of all, there is nothing wrong speaking about yourself, if the intention is to make a point. It must be done with the consciousness that someone cares to listen to you.
Everyone needs attention. I got yours by engaging you in this post. Jesus is the Master communicator, and He taught us how to speak.
John 7:18 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
